Why "disappointing"? And do all systems really "entail toward the future"? That's an intriguing thought. I suppose it depends on how we define our terms, but my intuition is that only living systems entail toward the future, whereas all other systems don't so much "entail toward" as "entail FROM".

I suppose it's to be expected, especially after Gene Roddenberry died. Rick Berman, the guy who took over the helm, had other ideas and goals in mind. He apparently didn't need it ("the franchise") to be a modern fable through which to illustrate certain human truths. Instead, he wanted to see how far he could take it as a money maker, if he could extend the appeal to non-trekkies. I've never seen a breakdown of the financial end of things, which might be interesting. I'd like to know how the profit margin compares, before and after. I rather hope it has taken a nose dive!
