Star Trek did diverge, didn't it?  I suppose
'ideals' aren't always self-sustaining .. especially
when face with environmental realities .. like
different agendas and anticipations.

I image your dad found it both exciting and disappointing -
that systems entail toward the future, but the nature
of such futures are open for manipulation.  The behaviorings
are patterned but the content is anything but.
