Re: Metabolic closure in (M,R)-systems

I wrote...

Unfortunately that is not how science advances -- it doesn't happen in little semi-private discussions between like-minded individuals, but in the public literature. People will not come to you: you have to expose your views to public scrutiny, even to public ridicule, by publishing them in publicly available journals.

To which David replied

Ah Athel, where is your proper sense of romance? To me, this is like denying inspiration to the scientific endeavor.

Well of course, the late-night discussions over a glass of beer that we all had as students about the Meaning of Life and so forth have a romantic component, but eventually one has to move away from romance. Inspiration first, certainly, but some solid hard work afterwards as well. Einstein didn't just sit back and relax after he had tried out his ideas about the constancy of the velocity of light on his friend Mr Besso (whose contribution to the history of physics, other than being a sounding board, remains rather obscure).
