Carlos,
In my father's usage, "encoding" is a process. It involves
measurement, but it is not just that. As a process, it involves
many decisions and many measurements. Does that help clarify?
Are you using 'entailed' in some Rosennean notion? I'm
afraid I can't make any clear sense of what 'entailment' means in Rosen's words. I asked Tim Gwinn about this, but could you give me a definition of 'entailment' in Rosen's terms? Yes, I will. In fact, Tim and I are not in agreement about
entailment as my father meant the term: he has his own definition, which is his
prerogative. I will put together a new post about this, in the
morning.
this is assuming Rosen reference to a
system is to what he calls the 'formal' one, if not, I'm completely lost in what he means in his book). So, where the 'semantic element' is being introduced is a mystery for me. Once more, I will take a fresh approach on this tomorrow, as well.
I probably should wait to reply since I really do have to get some sleep-- but I
didn't want you to think I wouldn't address these issues. Incidentally, I want
to say that I appreciate your mode of conveying your confusion-- discussion is
so much more useful when it doesn't raise anyone's blood
pressure.
Thanks.
