Hi Tim,
I have the theme for the Spring edition nailed down:
"Measurement". More specifically: The definitions of this concept; What is
implied by it (interactivity, relational context, causality, life...); What
ISN'T implied but is assumed (accuracy, generality, etc); What are the
roles this concept plays in science; What are the roles in the
natural world; etc. It's a very rich subject, one which leads to many other
aspects of science and one that plays a fundamental role in the behaviors of
living systems. It's no surprise then that this is also a subject about which my
father wrote a great deal.
The Summer theme is likely to be "Optimality" and its inverses.
Again, "Optimality" as a concept carries several implications, one of which is a
definite "perspective" and "context". This, too, has an implicit interactive,
relational aspect to it. Optimality also implies life and anticipation, the same
way that "Measurement" does.
The Autumn theme I haven't chosen, but I think it's likely to be
various notions of "Causality" and "Entailment", with a focus on the relational
aspect of these things. In particular, the kinds of entailment relations that
science deals with in modeling and the kinds of modeling that my father
believed living systems are capable of.
Comments are always welcome!
