Remember my question to Dan: "Is there an ecosystem on the moon?" My point was that there is an "environment" on the moon, but an ecosystem requires "life". Removing life from an ecosystem changes the definition back to "environment". But removing life does not remove complexity, which was my father's point:
 
Complexity exists, whether there is life or not, but life exists because of complexity.

I just don't understand what is "alive" meaning? the model of the restricted DNA-stuff? extracted from the rest of it?
