Dr. Aloisius Louie took this picture of my father, who was
Aloisius' PhD advisor in 1980 and 81. I used this photo as part of the slide
presentation during my talk at Asilomar because it's so perfect, so completely
representative, right down to the pipe in his hand. If he wasn't actually using
it, it would be in one of the bulging, overfilled pockets of his jacket. As
you can see from this photograph, my father was not an organized fellow and
tended to file things via the "pile method". I have since discovered that this
is genetic, and while I hesitate to consider any of the qualities I inherited
from my Dad a "defect"... it certainly has its down side.
