Re: Inconsistency, etc.

Judith,
We?re getting closer. With a lot of snipping for brevity, here is my response.
Judith: This internal model is apparently not adaptive at all, or else it is very "slow"
to make adaptive changes . . . . I would call that a case of naturally occurring
"inconsistency"-- between the natural world (reality) and the organism's internal models
of it.
HP: I agree. That is also a normal use of inconsistent.
> H. Pattee wrote: Scientific definitions do not describe "actual properties of reality."
Judith: I will offer, for the sake of discussion, my own sense that the first two lines
are completely counter to what I perceive to be the case. Perhaps it was also my
"upbringing". But, what is science FOR, if not to help us understand "actual properties
of reality"?
HP: No problem here. The meaning of ?actual? is fuzzy enough for much useless
metaphysics. If we leave out actual, we agree.
I do claim that the need for inequivalent complementary models for adequate understanding
of complex systems is couched in terms of what Rosen believed and expressed.
