James,
You ask:
So there are simultaneous criteria/functions operating copresently.
- Do they affect each other's activities?
HP: In real cells, definitely ?yes.? We know a lot more about the details of protein
synthesis and replication in real cells than von Neumann could have possibly guessed. It
is all too complex. Von Neumann?s so-called kinetic model is only a rough outline of the
basic minimum conditions. I?ll go through his logic when I have time.
James: Spontaneous" is a very problematic word as far as I'm concerned
(in any situation, no matter where or how it's used). To me it's
HP: I agree. Bad choice of word. What I meant was that once the linear sequence is
established by instruction, the folding takes place by itself, that is, by just
statistical physical relaxation (except some proteins require scaffolding proteins to
help fold).
