Embellished - or made more profound - by the relation that a person's
'ideas' is effectively a representation of the 'self' of the person.
To hold to a specific idea is to present that to the world. If the
idea is attacked/challenged, so is the 'person'.

It is normal-functioning then, for someone to steel themselves -and
their ideas- from challenge. Be they ultimatley provable 'correct'
-or- 'mistaken'.
