I'm delighted at the existence of this list!

Hello,

My name is Judith Rosen. Robert Rosen was my father and my friend.

Having just subscribed, I would like to thank Tim Gwinn for going to all the
trouble of hosting a discussion list that encourages free and civilized
discussion of my father's work. I hope that a sense of discovery and
comradery will prevail here, and that this will be a list where differences
of opinion can be accepted and honored, where participants will exercise
good humor and respect for all points of view, and where discourtesy will
not be tolerated by any of us. My honest opinion is that while we may be
separated by space and time, there are many commonalities that are shared by
any group of people who would be interested enough in the ideas of one man
to subscribe to a discussion list devoted to exploring and developing those
ideas.

My purpose here is to share what I know from having the great good fortune
to have been raised by Robert Rosen, to have developed a wonderful
friendship and a sense of kindred spirits over the 38 years I had with him,
and the insights I developed while travelling with him and discussing his
ideas-- both privately and in the company of his colleagues. I also would
like to add to the understanding of the man behind the ideas, so that
posterity will remember him as the extraordinary human being that he was,
with the enormous range of intelligence, humor, decency, and even the quirks
and foibles that made him real and whole. In the parlance of his theoretical
framework: It is not possible to try and reduce Robert Rosen down to being
merely a scientist and hope to understand his ideas. I may not be a
scientist, a physicist, a doctor,  or a mathematician...  I am a writer and
an artist.  But I am also one of the very few, perhaps the only,  person on
this planet who knew him really well and understood both the person and the
work he was creating. I welcome questions and I promise to be both honest
and fair.
